September 15th and 16th are dates when Mexican people gather to celebrate the anniversary of the beginning of their independence war, which has happened more than 2 centuries ago. Mexico’s Independence Day is the ideal moment to enjoy traditional food, regional music and an amazing display of colorful ornaments in every corner of the country. However, there are 7 spots where you will have the opportunity to discover our tricolor culture in such special ways.

1. Garibaldi Square

This place, located near from Mexico City’s downtown, is well-known as the place of mariachi par excellence. No matter the pub or restaurant where you go in Garibaldi Square, you will enjoy an environment full of joy and traditional Mexican music played live. Apart from the delicious food you should ask for, try a shot of tequila or mezcal, two of our best Mexican liquors which are very popular worldwide.

2. Centenario Garden

In the heart of Coyoacan, just in the south area of Mexico City, you will find the Centenario Garden, which got its name by being inaugurated in the 100th Anniversary of Mexico’s Independence Day in 1910. If you want to live the experience of shouting ¡Viva Mexico! with less people than in Downtown, this spot is the best for you. The restaurants, bars, cafeterias and ice cream stores that surround the garden will enchant you with their unique bohemian atmosphere.

3. Los Virreyes restaurant

An hour far away from Mexico City, Los Virreyes Restaurant will be waiting for you at night on September 15th in the Magical Town of Tepotzotlan. This delicious spot has a magnificent sight to the central square where you can admire Mexico’s colonial tradition. Ask for a seat in the terrace to taste delicious Mexican snacks such as sopes, pambazos or gorditas and a glass of fresh hibiscus flower water.

4. Queretaro’s downtown

Queretaro City has been recently declared as Cultural Heritage of Humanity due to its beautiful colonial architecture and the way it preserves its ancient traditions. Go to downtown on Mexico’s Independence Day and you will witness a lot of special events such as open-air concerts and dancing parties. Do not forget to visit one of the restaurants of Zenea Garden where you could try some exquisite enchiladas with chicken or cheese, potatoes, carrots and jalapeño peppers.

5. San Miguel de Allende

It was in Guanajuato where Independence War started, and  in San Miguel de Allende the pride of being Mexican is taken to one of the biggest levels in the country. Wherever you go in this Magical Town, you will appreciate the mysticism of baroque architecture which is decorated with lots of tricolor motifs in Mexico’s Independence Day. If you are looking for a extreme celebration, go for a horse ride or fly over the treetops on a zip line at San Miguel Adventure Park.

6. Toro Rojo pub

Would you like to enjoy the night of September 15th near the sea? You should go to Cancun and be part of the Mexican festive mood at Toro Rojo pub. This spot is located near from Nichupte Lagoon, so it is a perfect spot to watch the fireworks show reflecting on the sea water. Apart from the wide variety of drinks, you should taste their super nachos and their chilaquiles sandwiches. If you are travelling with a dog or a cat, you can take it with you as it is a pet friendly place.

7. Puerto Vallarta’s Central Square

Puerto Vallarta is one of the most gorgeous coastal destinations in Mexico for people who really enjoy nightlife. Start your Mexican evening by trying the pregnant fish or some roasted shrimps in huichol sauce at any restaurant, and then go to the Central Square to be delighted with the pyrotechnics. Are you arriving on September 15th? Do not miss the traditional horseman parade which goes down the streets of the pier.

Maybe, this is the first time you celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day and you really have to live this exciting party in one of the previous 7 spots. Take advantage of your relocation experience to know more about Mexican culture by taking part of the awesome activities that occur on September 15th and 16th. We hope you enjoy this date a lot just like us.
