VIDEO GAMES, A GROWING MARKET

After analyzing the situation of the videogames market in Colombia, it can be seen that it presents enormous opportunities for the growth and for foreign investment in the country.  In Colombia there are companies capable of reaching international video game markets and attracting the attention of the big ones of the industry. Likewise, the space for the growth of this industry is quite large today, which enables innovation, investment and the creation of guidelines in the Colombian gaming industry.

One of the most relevant examples was the birth in 2004 of the company Immersion Games, now converted into Effect Studio. This company was born when the American video games company Artificial Studios found in Colombia talent to develop video game production. Another example that shows the foreign interest in Colombia for the development of these products is the purchase of the Colombian company Brainz Games by the American developer Jam City, based in Los Angeles and famous for producing games related to Great brands, highly recognized in the world of entertainment, as are Harry Potter, Family Guy, Futurama and the Marvel universe.

From the point of view of domestic consumption of video games in the country, it should be noted that it is estimated that about 16 million of Colombians are regular players and therefore constitute an important market for the marketing of video games produced both in the country as outside. It is also estimated that the national market generates gains close to 335 million dollars per year, according to information from the specialized portal Newzoo.

The Colombian economy has a very interesting dynamism in terms of opening new markets, their growth and the investment opportunities they represent. One of these new markets is software in general, with a particular focus on the topic of video games and entertainment. The Colombian market is currently at a time when the production of video games has enormous growth possibilities and the buyers market is attractive, the country is the fourth largest consumer of video games in the region.

In the same way, it should be taken into account that there are very receptive international markets to the Colombian video games, having these markets great importance in the world of videogames.  The Colombian industry manages to appeal the foreign buyer, especially of markets as important as that of the United States and Mexico. Everything mentioned above creates an ideal scenario for investing in this segment of the country’s economy, generating a link between Colombian talent, the country’s companies and both domestic and foreign investment for market growth and Wealth creation.
