Created in 1988 by Fanny Mikey and Ramiro Osorio, the celebration of the 450th anniversary of the foundation of Bogota, under the slogan An act of faith in Colombia, became a cultural adventure. One of its main objectives was the artistic integration of Latin American countries into the world.
 
Today it is one of the biggest festivals of performing arts in the world for its convening, the quantity of performances and the diversity of genres: the greatest theater companies in the world have participated, as well as the teachers who have renewed theatrical languages; the number of functions (performances) is unsurpassed by other festivals in just 17 days, working the street and hall theater scenes alongside, making it one of the most complete shows of the performing arts scene in the XXI century.
 
The festival includes different types of plays in various parts of the city, among which are included: street theater (free), indoor theater, international concerts,classical dances, children’s and youth theater,storytellers, among other events. In recent editions, the festival has turned the Corferias Convention Centre into the “theater town” during the two weeks of the festival, there in addition to presenting the national and international plays. Events are held for all ages, including academic exhibitions and trade shows, the circus and children’s activities.
 
During the 17 days of the festival, the streets of Bogota dress up for the party, the inauguration takes place every 2 years with colorful parades and caravans from each theater foundation, allowing all citizens to appreciate and be spectators of this great event.
 
Mexico: the guest of honor of the year
 
The Iberoamerican Theater Festival in Bogota in 2016, will have Mexico as its guest country, which will be presented in seven hall plays and two street plays, and with artists of the statue of Luis de Tavira, one of the most important masters of the Aztec scene.
 
In this edition of the Festival, which will take place from the 11th to the 27th of March, there will be a special presence of Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland and the Faroe Islands) with plays of different genres, among which Montero highlights Fanny and Alexander, an adaptation of the Uppsala Stadsteater, of Sweden, from the Ingmar Bergman film.
 
The programming of the Iberoamerican festival will consist of 187 plays from 27 countries, among which highlight the large-scale shows, such as a Danish version of Hamlet, with the participation of the Tiger Lilies band.
 
At its launch, that will follow the aesthetics of the typical 15th birthday celebration for Colombians girls. Also some of the most memorable moments of each one of the editions of the Iberoamerican festival, will be remembered. So, the countdown begins for one of the most important theater festivals in the world. Bogota is waiting for you!
